After all the drama that unfolded in Montreal, I want to begin by saying that Formula Drift has heard our proposal and appeal and have since awarded us our Top 16 points. They have also approved our proposal for a rule change to allow for protests in Top 32, effective immediately. Had this rule been re-instated before Montreal, we would have been able to show FD that Cameron’s car shut off in front of me, causing the collision. Closure and resolve was felt by myself and my team and we went into Seattle with our heads high. I can tell you that while we felt like blowing up our feelings through the interwebs, I decided to take a professional and constructive approach to the issue and I’d like to thank my tuner & data acquisition teammate, Jei Chang from BlackTrax Performance for orchestrating a comprehensive and constructive proposal to FD for review. I also would like to recognize and thank Ryan Sage, the judging staff and the competition director for taking a holistic approach to my proposal. Knowing that we made a difference in this sport of professional drifting, I hope other teams can also lead by example to further aid in the growth of this sport, in healthy manner. Thank you.

Thursday practice went really well. Right away the car was really close to it’s ideal setup. After a few click of rebound in the front Parts Shop Max triple adjustable coilover shocks, the car became incredibly balanced and easy to drive. We started picking up the pace faster and faster, and dialed in some tandem runs to finish off the day.

Our car was fast going into the weekend. The Falken 615k is such a solid tire, that with very little tire pressure adjustments, our car was easy to drive, consistent and quick. A few runs in practice, we got our qualifying line set and we ended the day in 10th position going into the Top 32 elimination battles for Saturday.

Our team had a primary goal for  this event. To drive smart and stay away from the upper limits during battles. With how this season has been going, taking risks and driving overly aggressive has not yielded the results we wanted. Our first battle was against Juha Rintanen in his 2JZ powered s15 and we were to lead first. Taking off the line and entering into the long Evergreen Speedway bank we were able to lay down a solid and safe lead run. He provided a good chase, but going into run 2 he called his 5 minutes. It looked like he was having a problem with his head gasket, and was not able to pull to the line for the second run. We were awarded the win and move on to the top 16 to face Fredric Aasbo. The whole driving smart tactic was super important in this battle. We followed first, and I left a slight gap right before initiation. Our car was fast enough to reel him in right away. By the mid point in the bank we were door to door and finished off the run with pressuring points throughout the run. We swap positions and I lay down the best lead run I possibly could, but we were unable to shake Aasbo. After deliberation, the judges call a One More Time.

After some fresh Falken tire rubber and 5 gallons of Ignite RED racing ethanol, we were back out. We followed first and this time I picked up the aggression a little more. Less gap at initiation, and more pressure through the infield, finishing up the run with no mistakes, we took to the lead position. I cranked up my line and speed just a little bit, coming off the bank high and tight on the wall. After a quick transfer into the power ally Aasbo was still right there and finished off the run with good pressure. The judges decide Aasbo gets the win and our weekend was unfortunately over.

At first I was quite bummed, as any racing driver would be when they don't win. However, I took a second and thought about the events that had transpired over the last few events and compared them to this round. I drove to the team's plan, put the car in the places required, did not make a mistake, and drove as hard as the team wanted me to drive. Of course I could have cranked up the aggression as much as needed, but we risk a mistake at this point. I am looking at this event as a strong learning curve that is taking us in the direction that the team wants to be. Leaning to close that gap (figuratively and literally), is what separates the men from the boys in this sport. Thank you team for standing by me as I adapt to this ever-changing sport that is drifting. We will get there boys, and our time will be glorious.

Sincerely,

Matt Field
